University Hall
New York, USA
To help meet New York University’s shortage of student housing, Davis Brody Bond Aedas designed a 20-story high-rise student dormitory comprised of 172 apartments. With additional facilities such as dining, laundry, study, and exercise rooms, the building was designed to provide an optimal mixture of apartment and campus living.
Set in the center of the U-shaped building is an atrium space, covered by a sloped, tensile-structured skylight. Around it on two sides is a landscaped garden area which is visible from the study rooms.
The building provides numerous opportunities for socializing, studying and casual interaction, activities essential to the creation of a campus community. A selection of warm and durable materials was chosen for finishes, furniture, and materials to create housing that is more inviting than traditional dormitory housing.
In 2008, the firm completed the conversion of the 2-story dining hall into a hub of student resources, including classrooms, study space, counseling offices, study abroad information office and food services.
