Queens Hospital Center
Jamaica, New York
Davis Brody Bond Aedas, in association with Perkins & Will, programmed and designed a new replacement facility for Queens Hospital Center, part of the New York City Health & Hospitals Corporation.
The new 354,000 sq. ft. facility is a 200-bed community hospital designed around “centers of excellence” in Women’s Health and Cancer Care. The facility provides 120,000 sq. ft. of comprehensive community primary, specialty, and ambulatory care, along with shared outpatient and inpatient diagnostic services. The new facility represents a significant reduction in inpatient beds in favor of an increase in ambulatory care services.
A major achievement of the new facility is the atrium space, which serves as the primary lobby, circulation and focal point for both the ambulatory services in the new building and those that were relocated to an existing building.
The large 60,000 sq. ft. footprint of the new hospital allows for the development of patient care centers, such as the Women’s Center, on entire floors, with inpatient beds and outpatient exam areas adjacent to shared diagnostic and treatment areas. The result is minimized patient and staff movement and increased operational efficiency of the facility.
