University of Wisconsin Health Sciences Learning Center
Wisconsin, USA
The Health Sciences Learning Center at the University of Wisconsin was conceived of and designed to support recent and evolving changes in student learning, medical research, clinical practice and information technology and media. The building provides learning resources for the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy, which had previously been located in distant, separate facilities.
The major component of the Health Sciences Learning Center is the Ebling Library, which serves a broad constituency, including patients and families, students, clinicians, researchers, and is part of a statewide outreach program. A major objective of the building is to foster interdisciplinary exchange, team work, and a sense of community for students in the health sciences.
The building deemphasizes traditional boundaries between the library, the computer laboratories, classrooms and distance learning facilities. A diverse range of learning spaces are organized around a central atrium, and distinctions between what are conventional library and non-library services are erased- both from an administrative perspective, as well as physically.
