Harvard Medical School Warren Alpert Research Building
Massachusetts, USA
Harvard Medical School’s Warren Alpert Research Building is connected to, and integrated with, the existing historical buildings on the Harvard Medical School campus. It houses three major departmental research programs of the school.
As part of the whole design process, a number of amenities were created for the Medical School: a new glass-roofed courtyard between the new and existing structures which incorporates food service, casual lounges and space for formal events; another exterior planted courtyard; and new entrances to the Medical School from the historic Quadrangle that integrate access to the garage below-grade.
The building was conceived as a core and shell structure with modular, flexible systems that allow the individual tenants to organize their own spaces in suite configurations as well as small laboratories with central shared support. This strategy enabled the construction to proceed on a fast-track with a guaranteed maximum price based on a generic plan. As a generic biomedical facility, this project provides laboratory and lab support components, specifically, special programs including transgenic research, biopolymers, protein sequencing, flow cytometry, electrophysiology, and other neuro-evaluation techniques.
