Harpfield Primary School
Stoke on Trent, UK
Harpfield is a one-form-entry primary school for 210 pupils and 30 nursery places with outreach community facilities.
The central shard became the design device to direct the spatial variations demanded by current teaching patterns, curriculum and specific site conditions. An informal buffer zone, this area acts as an area of interplay and interaction, liberated from the formal requirements of class based teaching.
The openness of the design has been praised by teaching staff which encourages natural surveillance from most areas - the apparent material solidity of the entrance approach gives way to lightness and transparency at the heart of the school.
