Haymarket Interchange

Edinburgh, UK

With trams due to be operating in Edinburgh by 2010, there is a requirement to investigate how a proposed tram stop can be integrated at Haymarket to provide a functional interchange with heavy rail. The existing railway station is already operating beyond capacity – the station building and bridge unit are heavily congested and there is no disabled access down to platform level.

This project seeks to address these issues whilst also investigating how a successful interchange might be incorporated into a wider masterplan for the area.

The scheme proposes to re-define Haymarket as a proper urban space with new development repairing previously eroded site edges. Within this, a dynamic concourse roof expresses arrival, establishes routes through the interchange into the city and provides a maximum of flexible development area below in the tradition of great Victorian termini.
