Manchester Airport, Terminal 2

Manchester, UK

In 2005, as part of the Aedas 10 year Framework Appointment to Manchester Airport Developments Limited, Aedas was selected to lead a multi disciplinary team to develop the design of a major extension to Terminal 2 at Manchester Airport.

The £350m design includes a major 23,700 m2 extension to the existing 44,000 m2 passenger processing facilities.  The new development includes 10,000 m2 of airside retail and food and beverage facilities.  The Aedas design is geared to lift capacity in incremental stages from 7.2 mppa to 18 mppa and includes self service check-in, bag drop facilities and improved security out-bound control.  The scheme also involves extending the existing single aspect West Pier to provide an additional 4 no. code E+ contact stands and a tunnel served satellite pier, some 340 metres x 30 metres on plan, delivering 4 no. code E+, 4 no. code E and 8 no. code C contact stands.

The airfield was replanned to optimise taxi-way circulation and access on to the twin runway system and deliver a further 8 no. code E remote stands. The scheme also includes a self-contained bussing pier with 12 departure gates.
