Aedas Manchester celebrates award success as Stockport Academy is announced as ‘New Design’ winner in the Stockport Conservation & Design Awards 2009.
The judges selected Stockport Academy not only for its creative response to the site and topography, which was considered all the more impressive as the previous school remained open on site throughout construction, but also for the inspiring sequence of internal spaces that flow from the grand public entrance and the selection of quality materials and finishes that go beyond the usual standard achieved in a public building. The result is a building that despite its size has a warm almost domestic feel.
Stockport Academy is a £24m state-of–the-art secondary school accommodating 1150 pupils and specialising in science based subjects supported with a business and enterprise theme. Open to the local community for provision of high quality educational programmes and facilities the Academy is a symbol for the transformation and regeneration of Cheadle Heath.
