Double Victory for Aedas at the International Property Awards 2011

16/12/2011

Further to victories at the 2011 Asia Pacific Property Awards and 2011 Arabian Property Awards, Olympia 66 in Dalian, PRC and New Sports City Stadium in Qatar, the UAE, went from strength to strength to have won respectively the “Best International Retail Architecture” and the “Best International Leisure Architecture” in the prestigious International Property Awards. The results were announced at The Savoy in London on 12 December (Monday).

Olympia 66 is 221,900 sq m retail development in Dalian that hails with a contemporary Chinese overtone. Taking inspiration from the auspicious Tai Chi twin carps, which are traditional Chinese symbols representing wealth and abundance, the architectural form exhibits a dynamic loop with circulation flowing through a continuous chain of retail and atrium activities, creating an exciting and diverse lifestyle experience.

The New Sports City Stadium in Doha, designed from Aedas LA office, draws from the rich traditions of nomadic Bedouin “architecture” that are well adapted to the harsh Middle Eastern environment. The Stadium was designed to be a completely flexible building capable of adapting and mechanically transforming for numerous events and functions. The large fabric roof functions as a massive “Tent” sheltering the plazas, hotel, and theater below. The “Tent” creates a “Village Square” that will be active day and night, year around.

Established 17 years ago, the International Property Awards in association with Bloomberg Television is the world’s most prestigious property competition. The awards’ programme covers residential as well as commercial categories with regional heats for Arabia, Europe, Africa, the Americas and Asia Pacific. The highest scoring entries from each category in every region are then re-evaluated to by a panel of over 60 experts to establish the winners at international level. Winning these much coveted awards against some of the most accomplished players in the sector once again proves Aedas are at the height of design excellence and makes our team around the world proud of our achievements.

Executive Directors David Clayton and Christine Lam, the designers behind Olympia 66, were at the ceremony to collect the awards on Aedas’ behalf. Christine Lam said, “From the outset of the design process our objective was to deliver a project that was considerate to the context and inspiring to the city and to the users. We are thrilled that the judging panel recognise this objective and its delivery in Olympia 66.” David Clayton said, “We would like to thank our clients for their confidence in Aedas that has made this moment of celebration possible. We look forward to creating more outstanding designs with our clients in the future.”
