Inspired by Aedas’ in-house carbon-management scheme, Aedas London based Sustainability led the development of CarbonBuzz. Using CIBSE Energy Use Benchmarks with software from the BRE, CarbonBuzz provides a platform to benchmark and track project energy use from design to operation. The website enables designers to compare forecast and actual energy use for their projects against the benchmarks and data for projects entered by participating practices anonymously.
The aim of the platform is to raise awareness of the measurement of CO2 emissions from buildings and show the difference between forecast and real energy use and help the industry address the sources of this discrepancy. It presents a template that encourages participating practices to share emissions and energy use data for all their buildings, both during design and once a building is occupied.
In 2010 CarbonBuzz consortium was awarded a three-year match funding grant from the Technology Strategy Board to develop the platform into an ‘authoritative’ database for CO2 emissions of buildings in the UK and abroad.
