The 1150-place new Academy replaced Evelyn’s Community School and incorporates a performing arts centre.

At the heart of the school lies a large central top-lit atrium, with all accommodation branching off this space. Circulation is clear and easy to navigate, with views out to the courtyard gardens around which the departments are planned.

Low-energy heating and cooling is achieved through high thermal mass and the employment of a TermoDeck system. Programmatic arrangements ensure that parts of the school, such as sport facilities, can be used whilst others are closed to ensure that plant is not running unnecessarily. The requirement for artificial lighting is minimised by north-facing skylights and the shallow plans of each teaching wing.

A post-occupancy evaluation was carried out in 2008 and user feedback indicates that the building is comfortable and popular with users. The energy survey showed substantially lower heating and cooling figures than benchmarks, however these savings were offset by a higher appliance use due to increased IT density.
