The Anvil Concert Hall and Arts Centre was originally conceived as home for the Bournemouth Symphonietta. It also provides a multi-function arts facility that is a new social centre for Basingstoke. The 1,400-seat concert hall, designed primarily for symphonic music, can also function as a proscenium and apron stage theatre or cinema, and in flat-floor format as a venue for exhibitions and sports events. Combined with its small hall studio and the refurbished Haymarket Theatre in the centre of the old town, the development meets the full spectrum of requirements needed by the new town. The foyers are the social heart of the building, drawing in visitors throughout the day to a variety of events and facilities. The café and bars open onto the broad terrace facing the parks and are well used throughout the year. In line with Basingstoke’s policy towards artworks, the work of four separate artists was incorporated into the fabric of the building
