A combination of sensibility and rationality
Andy Wen: Good architects should have green concept in mind at early design stage!
When speaking about Nangang of Taipei, most of us may immediately associate it with science parks, the speedy walking pace of the office workers, etc. However, you may have noticed recently that there is a unique, curvy building making not only a new landmark for the district, but also softening the cityscape.
Lè Architecture is designed by Andy Wen, Aedas’ Global Design Principal who was born in Taiwan and grew up in the United States. As an American Taiwanese architect, Andy has integrated his deep understanding and passion for his hometown Taiwan into the design of Lè Architecture. The building features Taiwan’s tallest green facade among office buildings.
In order to implement the design concept, apart from the form and design, Andy insisted to handle every details even at the public areas on his own including the public areas so as to give a comfortable and harmonic feeling to the interior and exterior of the building. The interior of the building also uses the curves of pebble concept, creating a warm atmosphere with soft lines by wood.
The design of the 18-storey Lè Architecture drew inspiration from the shape of the moss-covered river pebbles along the Jilong River. The pebbles inspired Andy to incorporate the elements into the design and shape of the building.
Located by the Jilong River with mountains on the opposite bank, The 60 metres tall Lè Architecture delivers a unique, aesthetically appealing exterior coupling greenery with the façade, and conveys the idea of roundness and elegance which mediates among the rectangular buildings. It achieved a LEED gold certification this year with its outstanding sustainable design.
According to Andy, Lè Architecture combined the sensible and rational approaches of two proposals – sensible in the terms of the pebble-like appearance and rational in its scientific and ecological functions. “Architects should have sustainable concepts in mind from the very beginning of design, not considering it after the building is designed,” said Andy.
Another special feature of Lè Architecture is the ‘urban living rooms’ where efficient, interactive and healthy office spaces are carefully planned to provide communal areas with bar tables and create a comfortable and inspiring work environment for creativity for tenants.
