The first RIBA China Chapter seminar, the “2020 RIBA China 100 Eminent Architect”, was held on June 14, 2020 in Shanghai. Assembling leading design talents in the architecture and construction industry, it aims to probe into issues in the urbanisation process of China and to create solutions and to define trends for the future development of our urban environments. Aedas Global Design Principal and Honorary Chairman of RIBA China Chapter Ken Wai delivered keynote speech on “The Architecture of Coexistence”.

After the conference, acclaimed publications The Paper and Time + Architecture interviewed Ken Wai on his design theory and insights in China’s architecture industry. He spoke on an architect’s social responsibility and leading role in creating sustainable cities when designing spaces. Whether the solution is in height or density in designing for high density cities, Ken believes that coexistence architecture is the key to sustainable development. Architects must balance between feasibility, commercial and social value for projects to coexist with the city and better serve the local community. He also spoke on RIBA’s efforts to drive excellence in architecture and promote the shared vision of the global architecture community.
