Taichung Commercial Bank Headquarters Project won an ‘Oscar of Architecture’

Taichung Commercial Bank Headquarters topped competition from around the world and won the Commercial Mixed-use – Future Projects category at this year’s World Architecture Festival (WAF) Awards. This project also won the Tall Buildings category at MIPIM/The Architectural Review Future Project Awards 2018. This is the first time for a building in Taiwan to win both significant awards.

Every year, there are a number of Taiwanese architecture shortlisted at WAF Awards to compete against other projects from all over the world. This year, NTU Cosmology Hall, Lè Architecture and Taichung Commercial Bank Headquarters Project were among the 535 finalists from 57 countries. A jury composed of hundreds of architects decided the final winners for each category.

Taichung Commercial Bank Headquarters Project is designed by Keith Griffiths, Chairman and Global Design Principal of Aedas. It is a 200-meter high luxury office tower located in the Taichung’s 7th Redevelopment Zone.

The design concept originates from the Chinese character ‘中’ (literally meaning ‘centre’) in the logo of the Taichung Commercial Bank, creating two ‘separate’ towers with a series of ‘floating’ facilities including swimming pool, conference rooms etc in the middle void to enrich the building shape and create an eye-catching feature along the main road.

It is the first time in Taiwan for an unbuilt project to have won both WAF and MIPIM Awards. The project broke ground in October 2018 and is expected to complete in 2022.
