Downtown Line

Singapore

Aedas played a key role in the design of MRT stations across all three stages of Singapore’s Downtown Line—one of the most complex underground rail projects in the country’s history.

For Phase 1, completed in December 2013, Aedas designed Bugis, Bayfront, Downtown, Chinatown and Marina Bay stations. This was followed by Phase 2, where Cashew and Hillview stations formed part of the extension opened in 2015. In Phase 3, Aedas continued its involvement with the design of Fort Canning, Bencoolen, Jalan Besar, Bendemeer, and Geylang Bahru stations.

Among these, Bencoolen stands out as the deepest station on Singapore’s MRT network at approximately 43 metres below street level. Its interior design draws inspiration from canyon wall geometry, expressed through layered forms and earth-toned materials that respond to the dramatic depth of the space.

Aedas’ involvement across all three phases underscores its deep expertise in underground transit design within one of the world’s most densely built urban environments, and reflects a strong commitment to shaping the future of Singapore’s transport infrastructure.
